The first thing a browser says about you should not be “Not Secure.”

Jack’s Fortune is a sit-down Chinese restaurant on Bay Ridge Road in Eastport. The site at the restaurant’s own web address is served over plain, unencrypted HTTP with no certificate on it, so every current browser puts a warning between a hungry visitor and the menu. This page is a demonstration of the same business, rebuilt this decade.

Why Durango built this page

The whole problem fits inside the address bar.

Two versions of the same restaurant’s web address. One of them is what a customer sees today before anything else loads.

Not Secure http://jackfortune1.com/index.html
Today. No certificate, so the connection is unencrypted and the browser labels it before the page draws a single pixel.
Secure https://jackfortune1.com
After. Same name, same address, certificate in place — and no file extension hanging off the end of it.
01

No certificate

The site answers on plain HTTP. Nothing between the visitor and the restaurant is encrypted, which is the single thing browsers are hardest on right now.

02

Flat-file addresses

Pages sit at addresses like index.html. It is a naming pattern from an earlier generation of the web, and search results carry it around as-is.

03

Ordering lives elsewhere

Online ordering runs through a separate third-party page rather than the restaurant’s own address, so the two halves never meet in one place.

What this page will not do: tell you what is wrong with how your current site looks. We never got its pages to render, so we have nothing honest to say about them. Everything above comes from the address itself — the protocol, the missing certificate, the file naming — and every one of those is checkable in five seconds from a phone.

Ordering

Keep the ordering setup. Move the front door.

Online orders already run through a third-party ordering page. Nothing about that has to change. What changes is where people arrive first.

  1. A customer searches the restaurant by name and lands on a page at the restaurant’s own address, with no warning screen in front of it.
  2. They see the menu and the phone number on the same screen, sized for the phone they are holding, with the number as a tap rather than something to copy out.
  3. They order the way they prefer — by phone, or through the ordering service already in place. Both routes stay open, and both start from a page the restaurant controls.
